What's A Solar Panel Inverter?
A solar panel inverter is a critical component of a solar power system, responsible for converting the direct current (DC) electricity generated by solar panels into alternating current (AC) electricity, which is used to power household appliances and can be fed into the electrical grid. In essence, it ensures that the electricity generated by your solar panels is compatible with your home’s electrical system.
String Inverters
These are the most affordable and commonly installed inverters worldwide. String inverters are connected to a series (or “string”) of solar panels. They work by converting the DC power generated by all the panels in that string into AC power. While they are cost-effective, one drawback is that if one panel in the string is shaded or experiences a malfunction, it can impact the entire string’s performance.
Microinverters
Microinverters are individual inverters attached to each solar panel. Unlike string inverters, they convert DC power to AC power directly at each panel. This approach ensures that each panel operates independently, which is particularly beneficial in situations with shading or panels facing different directions. Microinverters also provide the ability to monitor the power production of each panel, allowing for more precise system monitoring and maintenance.
Power Optimizer Systems

Also known as Smart String Systems, these systems combine some of the benefits of both string inverters and microinverters. Power optimizers are attached to each panel, like microinverters, but they work in conjunction with a central string inverter. The optimizers individually optimize the DC power output from each panel before sending it to the central inverter. This allows for panel-level monitoring and can mitigate the impact of shading or module failures on system performance.
