Understanding Solar Warranties: What Each Warranty Covers & What to Watch For
Solar is a big decision, and naturally you’ll want to have some peace of mind that your investment is protected. Solar warranties do exactly that, protect your investment, but not all warranties are the same. Here’s a clear map of the most common warranties you’ll encounter and how to interpret them. Typical Warranties:
- Product/Materials Warranty: Covers defects in the physical panel (typically 10-25 years).
- Production Warranty: Guarantees a certain output level (e.g. 80-90% of rated output at 25 years).
- Inverter Warranty: Inverters often have shorter warranties (5-12 years) but can be extended Orizon extends the inverter warranties to match the 25 year production warranty.
- Workmanship/Installation Warranty: Covers installation errors and roof damage (usually 1-5 years) Orizon Offers 5 Years.
What to Check
- Is the warranty transferable if you sell the house? While this may not affect you it could influence a potential buyer's decision. So it’s important to know.
- Are service calls or shipping covered for replacement? Usually this is a yes but its worth asking your installer to learn more about the process if a warranty claim is needed.
- How is “degradation” measured under the production/performance warranty? Depending on how long you will be living in your current home it’s good to know how long your panels will be producing at their stated peak efficiency.
