What Makes a Home a Good Fit for Solar?

If you’ve been thinking about going solar, one of the first questions you might ask is: “Is my home even a good candidate?”

It’s a smart question, and an important one. While many homes across Alberta, including Calgary and Edmonton, are excellent fits for solar, there are a few key factors that determine whether a system will perform efficiently and deliver long-term value.

The good news? You don’t need a perfect setup to benefit from solar. In fact, most of what makes a home “solar-ready” is simple, straightforward, and easy to evaluate. Here’s what to consider when deciding if solar is right for your home.

1. Your Roof’s Orientation and Angle

The position and slope of your roof are big indicators of how effective solar panels will be.

In Alberta, the ideal roof:

  • Faces south, southeast, or southwest

  • Has minimal shade during the day

  • Has a slope between 30–45 degrees (but flatter or steeper can still work)

Why south-facing? Because in the northern hemisphere, south-facing panels get the most consistent sunlight throughout the day — especially during Alberta’s long summer months.

But don’t worry if your roof doesn’t check every one of these boxes. A qualified solar provider like Orizon Energy can assess your home and design around your specific conditions.

2. Minimal Shading from Trees or Structures

Solar panels need direct sunlight to generate power efficiently. Shade from tall trees, chimneys, or nearby buildings can reduce the performance of your system, especially during key daylight hours.

That said, some shading can be worked around with smart panel placement, microinverters, or optimizers, tools that help panels operate individually instead of as a single system.

An on-site solar assessment will help identify any shading issues and offer realistic solutions.

3. Sufficient Roof Space

How many panels you need depends on how much electricity you use — and that determines how much space your system will require.

Most residential solar systems in Calgary or Edmonton need 200 to 400 square feet of usable roof space, free from vents, skylights, or dormers.

Your installer will measure this during the consultation and show you how many panels can fit comfortably without overcrowding or compromising aesthetics.

4. Good Roof Condition

Solar panels are built to last 25–30+ years — and your roof should be able to support them for just as long.

Before installing solar, your roof should be in good structural condition and have at least 10–15 years of life left. If your shingles are curling, leaking, or near the end of their lifespan, it’s often best to replace the roof before going solar.

Not sure how your roof stacks up? A solar consultant will inspect it during your site visit and offer guidance.

5. Steady or High Electricity Usage

Solar makes the most financial sense for homeowners who use a moderate to high amount of electricity, particularly during the day.

If you have a large household, run air conditioning, work from home, or are planning to add an electric vehicle charger, your energy usage may be higher than average, which means more potential savings from solar.

Even smaller households can benefit from solar, but your system will be sized appropriately to avoid overproduction.

6. You Own Your Home

This one’s simple: to install solar panels, you must own the home (and ideally, the land or rooftop space too). Solar installations typically aren’t viable for renters unless the property owner is on board.

If you live in a condo or multi-unit building, it’s still possible, but it requires coordination with the condo board or property manager. Ground-mounted systems are another option in rural or large-lot settings.

7. You’re Planning to Stay Long-Term

While solar can increase your home’s value and attract buyers, it’s still a long-term investment.

If you’re planning to move in the next year or two, the payback period may not align with your goals. But if you’re planning to stay in your home for 5–10 years or more, solar becomes an increasingly smart financial decision, especially with Alberta’s long-term sunshine advantage.

Bonus: You Want More Control Over Your Energy

This isn’t a technical requirement, but it’s an important one.

More homeowners today are exploring solar not just to save money, but to reduce their dependence on the grid and unpredictable utility rates. With solar, you take control of your energy production, increase your self-sufficiency, and reduce your carbon footprint, all while adding value to your home.
